#807 - Introduction to Refinery Materials, Corrosion, and Failure Analysis

Course Objective

Upon completion of this course, participants will have a practical understanding of the overall failure analysis process, with emphasis on determining the root cause of failure. Participants will learn to recognize characteristics of the more common types of failures and establish remedial measures. Concurrent with this, it will also discuss the fundamental aspects of materials engineering, corrosion, fabrication, and inspection as related to process plant applications.

Individuals who are responsible for supervising and/or providing, materials engineering, failure analysis, or inspection support for process facilities.

Course Description

Various types of materials failures in refining and petrochemical equipment are reviewed with guidance provided on field inspection and selection of samples for laboratory investigation. The major steps and methodology of the failure analysis process are emphasized, along with the roles and responsibilities of various personnel. Laboratory investigation techniques, analysis, and reporting of results are covered. The following topics are discussed:
